FlyPast from December 2015
The all-new December issue of FlyPast features a World War Two icon on the cover, the fearsome Messerschmitt Bf 109G. Featuring air-to-air photography from the lens of John Dibbs, we interview this remarkable warbird’s pilot about what it’s like to fly. What makes this ’109 especially interesting is that it was actually converted from a Spanish-built Hispano that participated in the Battle of Britain film.
Our 20+ page Spotlight section focuses on the famous Westland Lysander, one of the most readily identifiable aircraft of World War Two. The ‘Lizzie’ was most famously used for clandestine ‘ops’, such as transporting secret agents in and out of enemy territory. We look at its history, profile those who flew the type and examine its other roles in warfare.
Tom Allett reports from the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association member’s day, at which the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight starred.
Steve Beebee visits a former RAF Dakota that’s being restored as a tribute to the Army’s Airborne Forces.
Restoration leader Bob Glasby describes the final stages of readying Mosquito W4050 for its 75th birthday.
The remarkable exploits of Harold Hunt, regarded by many as the master of the Bristol Beaufighter.
We also visit the expanding Malta Aviation Museum and spend a night at a former RAF control tower that has been converted into a B&B. Graham Pitchfork pays tribute to Lanoe Hawker, the first pilot to receive the VC for aerial combat, and we present some rarely seen images depicting the Handley Page Halifax’s brief post-war career as a transport. We also bring you news of the Avro Vulcan’s last display flights and the return to the skies of another great Avro, the BBMF’s Lancaster PA474.
